• Volunteer Firefighter Duties

  Volunteer firefighters must be physically and mentally capable of responding to emergencies and performing firefighting duties as well as other strenuous or stressful tasks to protect life and property. The role involves performing duties under hazardous conditions, following orders from superiors, and adhering to Standard Operating Guidelines and department policies to ensure safety and compliance. Duties include but are not limited to: 

  • Responding to fire, rescue, or other emergencies and working as directed by Fire department officers.
  • Attend and participate in regular training, maintenance work, and public education events. 
  • Communicating fire and safety concerns to the Fire Prevention Division, and report equipment issues to the Station Officer. 
  • Complete investigation reports, regularly inspect protective gear, and act independently in extreme emergency situations.

  NOTE: Volunteer firefighters are compensated for attending training, responding to emergencies, and station duties. 

• Qualifications

  Applicants must:

  • Be 18 years of age or older.
  • Possess a valid Ontario driver’s licence (minimum G class) with satisfactory driving record.
  • Live and/or work in an area within a reasonable response distance to a Township of Tiny Fire Station. Locations will be assessed on a case-by-case basis. 
  • No criminal record for which a pardon has not be granted.
  • Successfully complete all required certifications and requirements.
• The Application Process

  Stage 1 – Recruitment Information Session

  Recruit information sessions are held prior to the application closing date. These sessions are optional but recommended as they will provide insight into the opportunity and requirements. It also allows you to ask any questions you may have about any part of the process or position. Please pre-register for the recruitment sessions with your local fire department. 

  Stage 2 – Application Submission

  Option 2: Fill out an application package and email it to fireofficeadmin@tiny.ca or drop it off at our Administrative Centre, Station 2 - Wyevale - 817 County Road 6 South (Monday to Friday: 9:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.).

  Stage 3 – Aptitude Appraisal (Written Testing)

  The aptitude appraisal is a short questionnaire designed to assess your ability to understand written and spoken information, technical and mechanical skills, and reading, reasoning, and math abilities.  A score of 70% or greater is required to advance to the next stage.

  Stage 4 – Job Specific Physical Testing 

  Candidates must submit a signed Medical Examination Report prior to completing the physical testing. Candidates are not able to complete physical testing without a medical report on file. See Job Specific Physical Testing Tab for a demonstration video. 

  Stage 5 – Interview

   

  Upon receiving a conditional acceptance: 

  • Proof of valid Ontario driver’s license, in good standing 
  • Current 3-year driver’s abstract
  • Employment Vulnerable sector check
• Job Specific Physical Testing

  A single physical fitness testing day will be scheduled during the recruitment process. You will receive an appointment time and be provided with all necessary equipment to complete the test. You are encouraged to bring your own CSA approved steel toe work boots. If you do not own any, steel toe firefighting boots will be provided.

  1. Ladder Climb: Climb a 16-foot ladder, undo and reattach a hose coupling, then descend. Not timed.
  2. Search: Crawl through a 34-foot tunnel maze while wearing a blacked-out SCBA mask. Navigate one 90-degree turn and return.
  3. Stair Climb: Walk up and down 14 stairs continuously for 10 full repetitions, using every step.
  4. Hose Drag: Drag 150 feet of charged fire hose, drop to one knee, and pull the hose an additional 25 feet until the finish line.
  5. Equipment Carry: Carry two saws (one in each hand) 150 feet, looping around a drum, and return them to the starting point.
  6. Ladder Raise and Extension: Raise a 24-foot ladder hand-over-hand until it’s upright, extend and retract the fly section using the halyard.
  7. Forcible Entry: Strike a truck tire on a table with a 10-pound sledgehammer until it moves 12 inches.
  8. Rescue: Drag a 175-pound mannequin 35 feet, make a 180-degree turn, and return 35 feet to the start.
  9. Ceiling Breach and Pull: Kneel and pull a 50-pound weight 25 times using a rope and pulley system, ensuring control on both the lift and return.

  Note: Steps 3-9 must be completed in a 13 minute (cumulative) time-period to pass the physical testing requirements.

  Each event flows directly into the next, with short walks between stations.

• FAQ

  How do I submit my application?
  • You can fill out an application form online here or alternatively completed applications can be delivered/emailed on or before the closing date at the Fire Department you are applying for. Locations and contact information for all departments can be found of the cover page of the application package. 

  Can I apply to more than one department?
  • Yes, you can apply for as many departments as you like, however preference may be given to candidates living within the municipality that they are applying for.

  I did not attend the Recruitment Information Session. Can I still submit an application?
  • Yes. Attendance at the Recruitment Information Session is not mandatory however it is strongly encouraged as it provides important information on the recruitment process, as well as expectations of firefighters. 

  Does the Department that I am applying for cover the costs for any required documentation (Medical Examination, Driver’s Abstract)?
  • No, applicants are responsible for any costs incurred during the recruitment process.

  If I am successful in the recruitment process, is facial hair allowed for members of the Fire Department?
  • For reasons of safety, facial hair that may affect the integrity of the face piece seal of self-contained breathing apparatus, i.e., beards, bushy moustaches, and long sideburns, is not permitted.

  I was invited to participate in the Aptitude Testing but I am unavailable on the scheduled date. Can I still proceed in the recruitment process?
  • If you are unable to attend on the specified time, please contact the Department you are applying for to determine if alternative arrangements can be made.

  Should I submit my completed Medical Examination Report with my application?
  • The Medical Examination Report is not required with your application. However, it is required for selected candidates to participate in the Stage 4 Job Specific Testing of the Recruitment process. Once you submit your application, we strongly suggest making an appointment with your Physician for a date between the Aptitude Appraisal and the Physical Testing.

  I have been invited to the Job Specific Physical Testing. Should I bring my completed Medical Examination Report and signed Consent Waiver to the testing?
  • While yes, you can bring your information to the testing, please be advised that this approach is not optimal, as department staff will not have had the opportunity to review the documents to ensure they have been completed properly. In addition, if a candidate forgets their form the day of the testing, they will not be able to participate. No exceptions.

  I have been invited to the Job Specific Physical Testing but am not able to see my Physician until after the testing date. Can I still participate in the testing?
  • No. Only candidates with a completed Medical Examination Report that has been signed by their Physician may participate in the testing. No exceptions. We strongly encourage applicants to schedule an appointment with their Physician for the dates between the aptitude testing and job specific physical testing, once they have submitted their application.

  How many training hours are required to become a volunteer firefighter?
  • Selected applicants will be expected to successfully complete 100 hours of practical training, plus additional online training.  Once the recruit training has been successfully completed, Volunteer Firefighters participate in continual training to improve and sharpen their skills. This involves monthly training nights and some weekend training sessions.

  Am I required to submit my Driver’s Abstract, Medical Examination Report and Criminal Background Check with my application?
  • Your application may be submitted without these documents. However, they are required at various stages in the process. Your completed Medical Examination report is required in Stage 4 (Physical Testing), and your Driver’s Abstract and Criminal Background Check are required if you are successful in the process. It is important to note that your background check must be an Employment Vulnerable sector check, not a volunteer. If you request a Volunteer Check, it will be denied.
